There are the teenagers who can’t talk to their parents about sex, the girl whose boyfriend wants proof that she’s a virgin, the woman who’s afraid her husband will find out about her affair, and the sex worker who always uses contraception with her clients but never with the man she loves. And then there are the counselors who listen to them and consult with one another in between cigarettes on the balcony. Featuring a stellar cast of veteran French actresses,. . .'God's Offices' is about the very business of life itself."

Ricky
(2009, France, 90 minutes, Director: Francois Ozon)

Play Date: Thursday, March 11
Prince Music Theater, 1412 Chestnut St. – 6:45 pm
Film Will Be Screened In French with English Subtitles
Trailer Is In French

Screenplay by Francois Ozon

Cast: Alexandra Lamy, Sergi Lopez, Arthur Peyret, Melusine Mayance

Synopsis:

"Gallic director François Ozon's idiosyncratic 'Ricky' represents an attempt to weld together two polar opposite and seemingly incompatible genres: kitchen-sink realist drama and high-concept Spielbergian fantasy. Loosely inspired by a Rose Tremain short story, the tale opens on a council estate just east of Paris (in the Seine-et-Marne), where single mom Katie ekes out a low-key and fairly miserable existence. She earns her keep as a factory worker, while glumly attempting to raise her seven-year-old daughter Lisa on the side. Circumstances shift dramatically when Katie falls into an affair with a Spanish colleague, Paco, but no one can guess just how dramatically. Together they conceive a son whom they name Ricky, and when the infant is born, he sports odd markings on his back; this gives Paco uneasy feelings and prompts him to leave the house. In time, the baby sprouts angelic wings, turning him into both a freak and a curiosity. This naturally leads to an endless series of complications, such as Katie's concern about how to dress Ricky and keep him from flying away. More disturbingly, it draws hordes of gawkers and paparazzi, who suffocate the family with intrusive attention and seem permanently unwilling to relent."

Soon after, Yannick Ménard, a 20-year-old incurable kleptomaniac, is one of Gisèle’s former youth-center clients. In despair after an unsuccessful suicide attempt, Yannick secretly falls in love with Gisèle. When he learns that she has become a widow, Yannick goes to extraordinary lengths to woo her. In the middle of a sweltering heat wave, Gisèle eventually succumbs to Yannick’s charms, finding herself both fascinated and confused by their age difference. Their budding relationship becomes trickier when a series of impromptu visitors start showing up, including Gisèle’s boss who walks in on some steamy seduction. In time, Gisèle’s two adult children and sister are soon to follow. This sets the stage for all kinds of fun and friction as well as a few more surprises.

What the Critics Said:

"An emotionally affecting drama that reinforces Philippe Lioret’s reputation for classic Euro filmmaking at its smoothest. A superb director of actors." Jay Weissberg, Variety “A sophisticated mix of crude realism and understated emotion infused with visual poetry.” Caroline Brothers, The New York Times
